Soils were hand-excavated down to depths of six feet; but, due to structural concerns for the house, all of the contaminated soil could not be removed. In order to alleviate odors so that the family could return to the home, the basement excavation was backfilled with stone, and a soil vapor extraction system was installed. A new concrete floor was poured in the basement to serve as a cap, a vacuum pump and carbon filter were installed in the basement, and soil vapors from beneath the basement were extracted and discharged outside of the house. The family returned to the house in less than two weeks.
