An oil spill had occurred when the fuel oil supplier overfilled the fuel oil tank, causing contamination of the soils along the outside of the basement wall. Since the fuel oil dealer had removed all of the impacted soils, the source of the residual odors was unknown. Brickhouse Environmental’s scientists drilled sampling portals into the cinder block basement wall and conducted a vapor survey throughout the wall. Small diameter cores identified pooled oil within the interior voids of the cinder blocks. A portion of the wall was removed and replaced, and the odors were mitigated.
