In 1979, Brickhouse Environmental successfully acquired a permit for the reclamation of an old stone quarry as a construction and demolition (C&D) waste landfill. Since then, Brickhouse Environmental has provided all consulting, permitting, design and monitoring services for this 200-foot deep, unlined quarry fill Site. The landfill pumps groundwater and leachate on an on-going basis to maintain the landfill in a “de-watered” condition. The water level beneath the quarry is well below surrounding groundwater levels, resulting in an inward gradient (i.e., cone of depression) in the groundwater table.
Brickhouse Environmental has managed and implemented the onsite quarterly groundwater sampling program for more than 20 years. We have also conducted extensive hydrogeologic studies to demonstrate that leachate generated by the landfill is not impacting groundwater quality around the Site. Our hydrogeologists successfully represented the owner before Pennsylvania’s Environmental Hearing Board, presenting detailed results of the studies to support a landfill expansion. As a result, the Site’s solid waste permit was extended, to allow an additional several years of landfill life.
Brickhouse Environmental has also prepared the construction specifications, drawings, and bid forms for improvements to the gas collection system and construction of the landfill cap. Brickhouse Environmental is also assisting with groundwater and leachate monitoring, radiation monitoring action plan permitting, annual reports, and operations and closure assistance.
